Local Martial Arts School Shines at European Tournament

Local martial arts school Kuk Sool Won of Yeovil has recently made its mark at the prestigious WKSA European Martial Arts Tournament.   This annual event, with a rich history of showcasing talent from across the continent, offers a platform for martial artists to demonstrate their skills and dedication.

School owner, PKJN Stephen Runnacles says “the European Tournament is a significant event in our calendar. It’s an incredible opportunity for our students to test their skills against some of the best in Europe.”

This year, Kuk Sool Won of Yeovil sent a robust team of 10 students, each participating in various disciplines such as forms, techniques, sparring and weapons. Their preparation for the tournament was rigorous, involving intensive training sessions. Stephen says “balancing competition training with regular instruction is crucial.  We focus on honing specific techniques and strategies while ensuring our students continue to develop their overall martial arts abilities.”

This year saw students of Kuk Sool Won of Yeovil coming away with a haul of 17 medals ranging from gold to copper. These accomplishments are a testament to the hard work and dedication of both the students and their instructors. Stephen comments that “competing internationally offers numerous benefits.  It builds confidence, resilience, and provides a unique experience.”

Special mention goes to adult student Michelle Cogman, a working mum of young children who only started her martial arts training a few weeks before tournament.  Michelle took the plunge to enter the tournament, was quite nervous but walked away with a medal!  Michelle’s children are very proud of her (as is her fellow students and instructors).

As well as competing, some students were also participating in national gradings which consisted of three hours showing all their skills and knowledge in front of high ranking Masters.  Going for 2nd Dahn was JKN Eleanor Thurston and towards 1st Dahn was DBNs Michael Pitman, Henry Silsby and George Tavener.. This grading was one of a series of national and school gradings.

For those interested in pursuing martial arts with the aim of competing, Stephen advises: “start with a solid foundation, be consistent in your training, and never lose sight of the joy that martial arts brings.”

As the local school celebrates its latest successes, it continues to inspire and cultivate a new generation of martial artists ready to take on the world stage.
