The summer holidays are a wonderful opportunity for children to relax, have fun and enjoy a break from the normal school routine. But as September approaches, thoughts inevitably start turning towards going back to school.
For some children that’s exciting. For others, the thought of a new teacher, a different classroom, changing friendship groups or even starting a completely new school can bring a few nerves.
At Kuk Sool Won® of Yeovil Martial Arts, we believe martial arts can give children much more than physical skills. It can help develop the confidence, focus, discipline and resilience that they can take with them into the classroom — and throughout life.
Throughout August, we’re inviting children aged 6 years and over to come along and experience this for themselves with two FREE trial classes.
🥋 Confidence Starts Here
One of the greatest things about learning martial arts is seeing a child realise:
“I can do this!”
Children aren’t expected to walk through our doors already confident. Confidence develops gradually as they learn.
It might begin with remembering a new technique, completing an exercise they initially found difficult or having the courage to demonstrate something in front of the class.
Every small achievement matters.
As children progress, they begin to understand that improvement comes through practice and perseverance. That growing belief in their own abilities can carry over into other areas of their lives.
For a child returning to school in September, having the confidence to put their hand up, speak to somebody new or tackle something difficult can make a tremendous difference.
🎯 Ready to Focus
After several weeks away from school, getting back into the routine of listening and concentrating can be challenging!
Fortunately, these are skills we practise every time children step onto the training floor.
Traditional martial arts requires children to:
- Listen carefully to instructions
- Watch demonstrations
- Follow directions
- Remember sequences
- Control their movements
- Wait for their turn
- Concentrate on what they’re doing
And because they’re learning martial arts at the same time, it doesn’t feel like another school lesson!
Developing better concentration and self-control can be enormously valuable when children return to the classroom.
💪 Strong Mind. Strong Character.
Learning martial arts isn’t always easy — and that’s rather the point.
Sometimes a technique doesn’t work the first time.
Or the second.
Or the tenth!
We encourage our students to keep practising rather than giving up.
Over time, children discover that “I can’t do it” can become “I can’t do it yet.”
That develops resilience.
Traditional Korean martial arts also places great importance on respect, discipline and good manners.
Bowing forms part of our martial arts etiquette and is a cultural gesture of respect and humility. Children learn to show respect towards their instructors, their fellow students and the traditions of the martial art they are learning.
These aren’t simply lessons for the dojang. They’re qualities that can help children at school, at home and as they grow into young adults.
⭐ Give Them Their Best Start This School Year
September can mean different things to different children.
Some will be moving into a new year group.
Some may be changing schools.
Others might be starting a new school for the very first time.
Whatever their situation, helping children develop greater confidence, focus and resilience before they return can give them a positive start to the new academic year.
Martial arts also gives children something outside school that is theirs.
They can exercise, make friends, work towards goals, earn belts and recognise their own achievements.
And while they’re doing all of that, they’re having fun and burning off some of that seemingly endless childhood energy!
